Borge Borresen died 87 years old.

The founder of Borresen Boatyard, one of Danish sailings great old men and pioneer Borge Borresen died quiet and peacefully in his home in Vejle Sunday morning the 4th of March 2007 in the age of 87 years. As one of the few he achieved to become a living legend as a boat builder and Dragon sailor.

He built one of the first Dragons in Denmark in 1936, 16 years old together with his brother Albert, and even though in the next 65 years to come, he both constructed and built other boat types, it was the Dragon that remained his greatest interest.

In the Dragons highlights time from 1948 to 1972, there were Olympic races, where the first 10-12 boats in the result list were build at Borresen in Vejle, and when the Dragon class was taken off the Olympic Games, it was BB, who led the Dragon into the fibreglass age, and it was his achievement that the Dragon got its great international come back in the early 80ties, where it became one of the worlds most known keelboats.

At the same time he participated actively in the races, and won both the Dragons Gold Cup and European Championship several times. Borge Borresen has the world record in participating in s Gold Cup with 51 times in a row.

In his young years he sailed with Thorkild Warrer, later he became the helmsman and he topped as a sailor in the age of 74, where he won the Dragon World Championship together with Jesper Bank.

No Dragon sailor will ever forget, when the Borresen truck with the Dragon arrived at international races all over Europe, how the sailors (customers) gathered around the truck like bees, to get spare parts, as they just were missing. And everybody got what they wanted. How BB got room for all these spare parts on his truck remains a puzzle.

Together with him in the front seat was often his wife Inge, who nearly was a mother for the Dragon sailors all over the world. Therefore it was a very painful loss, when Inge died several years ago. Together they had 3 sons Ole, Lars and Anders. Ole and Anders worked together with their father at the boatyard in Vejle from when they were quite young, and even after the time when they had taken over the boatyard, BB still came and gave good advice in his own quiet and calm way. He did so until his dead.

Artificial hips and knees did not stop him from sailing and he still managed to compete with the best. But when he was 83 years old he started to have problems with the balance and therefore did not any longer participate in international races. Driving car he continued until the day before died.

Borge Borresen was Knight of Dannebrog and he had the pleasure in the last sailing season to see two of his grandchildren achieve good results in international races. The new generation Borresen is on the way.

Borge Borresen was for several decades Chairman of the Danish Dragon Association and as H.R.H Prince Henrik of Denmark he was Vice President in the International Dragon Association in London. He was known for his dedication and long term struggle to keep the dragon as a one design class.
Borge Borresen was a legend already when he lived. The time to come after his dead will not make the legend about one of the pioneers in Danish and International sailing, the skilled boat builder and noble yachtsman less.

Zoom8

The Zoom8 Express hits Norway again

Børresen Racing Team visits Brevik in Norway 21st- 23rd October. Are you about to buy a Zoom8 or Optimist, then you can get it delivered at low costs. Try the Zoom8 Yourself, we will bring a demo-boat to Brevik. You can be guided in handling and rigging the dinghy personally at the same occasion.
The Zoom8 is very popular among young Norwegians. The class is active, committed and still growing quickly. The sporting qualities of the Zoom8 attract more and more youngsters, so the Zoom8 has become a charming little story of sailing. With the launch of MK3 this season the trim functions have been improved, so the sailor gets a good touch and control with the dinghy. The improvements have been made without compromising with principle of “One-design” and without increasing production costs. For your older Zoom8 you can get upgrade-kit for the following trim: Mainsheet traveller, outhaul, cunningham, kick and main sheet (see below). Anders Børresen’s visit to Brevik is a fine chance to get personal guidance in mounting the up-grade kits. Please remember to order your kits in advance.
Link to Brevik

Zoom8 MK3 – Upgrade-kit

The new dinghies are equipped with improved trim functions. If you already have got a Zoom8, you can easily recondition it to MK3’s level of function. We deliver following upgrade-kits. (Prices are without carrying charges):
-Mainsheet traveller (75,- dkk). The set increases the gear on the mainsheet traveller, and it contains blocks and shackles.
-Outhaul (325.-dkk) The kit reduces friction in the outhaul system. It contains blocks, riveter and ropes.
-Cunningham (275.-dkk) The kit reduces friction and increases gear. It contains ropes and blocks.
-Kick (115.-dkk) The kit double the gear in a simple and efficient way. It contains block and ropes.
-Mainsheet (45.-dkk) It reduces the risk the hook in the mainsheet to catch any ropes by accident. It contains shackles and a new snap shackle.
You can update your dinghy bit by bit. This means that you can choose one ore more of the five kits at a time.
Please call us or mail for further information.

Start up a Zoom8 project

During the last years BB has helped many sailing clubs getting started with the Zoom8. In close cooperation with the clubs we have been a part in the effort to obtain subsidies from the local authorities, funds etc.
Give us a call on 75 82 59 00 and let us have a talk about how we can help your club to establish a Zoom8 group.

The fastest Zoom8 in the world

Expanding with more than 120 dinghies in Denmark in just four years the Zoom8 is the quickest growing dinghy class. The world’s fastest Zoom8s is the new Zoom8 MK3s built by BB.
The International Championship for Zoom8 is over for the this year and they turn out to be a huge success for the BB Zoom8s: By winning gold, silver and bronze at the Worlds, Silver and bronze at The European Champs and finally two gold, silver and two bronze at The Nordic Championships the Zoom8s from Børresen Bådebyggeri were the most winning in 2005. No less than 10 from among 18 achievable medals were won by BB Zoom8 dinghies.

BB is continuously developing the Zoom8 dinghy

By the launch of the new MK3 model in June we proved our foresight once again by optimising the trim functions for cunningham, traveller, kicking strap and outhaul. The sailors as well as the class will benefit by these improvements. The changes were approved by the international class committee and are now standard on all the new MK3 dinghies. Upgrade kit for older models is naturally available as bit by bit or as a complete set.
Zoom8 MK3 dinghies are delivered with white hull and light grey deck. The light grey colour for the deck has been selected in cooperation with the sailors. The new deck colour reduces remarkably the irritating reflection of sun light. Besides, the MK3 is equipped with lines, cleats and fittings in smart black and red colours pepping up the overall impression.
As an extra service the MK3 can be delivered with a mast meted out to fit the specific weight of the sailor and of course we can deliver all kinds of covers for the dinghy.

Denmark is now number one in Zoom8

The Danish Zoom8 sailors are the worlds fastest. They have won gold and silver at The Worlds, bronze at The Europeans and two gold, silver and bronze at The Nordic Championships. All in all they won 7 from among 18 achievable medals at the international championships.
The broadness in the class is full-size. 30 clubs offer Zoom8 sailing. The significant broadness and the balanced distribution of boys and girls in the Danish Zoom8 Association have contributed to the numerous successes abroad this year. About 30 Danish clubs have included Zoom8 sailing on their programs and at this year’s Junior DM and at the Torm Grand Prix regattas more than 30 dinghies were participating.
The Zoom8 sailors are broadly recruited among Optimist sailors, B- as well as A-sailors. The European Championships bronze medallist was e.g. the top-optimist sailor, Christian Stemann Andersen. The Danish Zoom8 Association is on a regular basis carrying out training camps, which both develop the sailors and at the same time introduce new sailors to the good atmosphere in the Zoom8 Class.

Feva

RS Feva - a whole new standard

RS Feva XL is a solid and roomy two-person dinghy constructed in polyethylene. The dinghy can be rigged with a gennaker and is an exiting and safe introduction to gennaker-sailing. It doesn't matter whether you sail for kicks or race to win. Hoist the gennaker...pick up a wave...pile on the power and go go go!!! There's no other the feeling quite like it.
The hull material is less fragile and does not require as much maintenance as fibreglass. Encapsulated buoyancy in the foam layer makes the RS Feva unsinkable. The mast is divided into two parts and can be stored along with boom in the length of the boat for easy transport.
Because it is handy on ground and joyful on the waves, the RS Feva XL is a first rate choice for clubs. RS Feva XL is also the dinghy for those parents who want to go sailing with their child.

Børresen today

The production of the fibreglass Dragon ”Racing 2004” is now handed over to Royal Denship, which is a company with a lot of know-how in high-tech production methods in modern boat building. We are having great expectations to what this step will do for the Dragon.
Børresen will continue the production of the other models: ”De Luxe”, ”CM Grand Prix” and ”CM Racing”. Although we stop producing fibreglass Dragons, we are still selling them.
BB Dragon De Luxe is built with teak deck and roof, cockpit coaming, king plank and covering board in mahogany. A pair of beautiful representatives of this model is Crown Prince Frederik’s “Nanoq” and Prince Henrik’s “Najade”.
CM Grand Prix is the ultimate model – fast, functional and beautiful. The hull is built of 8 layers of mahogany veneer, which is vacuum glued over a master plug. The so-called cold mould technique. CM Grand Prix is delivered with varnished topside and is built with deck as De Luxe. CM Racing is a painted variant.
Børresen is specialist in repair, boat care and optimising Dragons. These tasks are still carried out at the workshop in Vejle by Ole and Anders Børresen.
The production and sale of spare parts, masts and rigging for Dragons is extended as well as the online spare parts catalogue is broadened. The range of special fittings is large and covers many generations of Dragons. To be kept up to date, you should subscribe our email-newsletter service.
We are always offering the Dragon sailors service and support, which reflects many years of experience as an actor in the class.
Børresen’s other activities and boat program is continuing as up to now. Our motto is quality, service and fast boats. The quality is ensured by control and experienced workmanship. Børresen’s support and expertise is based on detailed knowledge of all steps in the production from the first strokes on the drawing board to the launch of a shipshape Dragon, but also based on many years of active racing experience. The foundation of building fast sailing boats is good teamwork with the top sailors and a still ongoing development of rigging, trim and search for new optimising possibilities. This teamwork has proved its fruitfulness at many regattas and Olympic games.

Dragon

Visions of a new strong partnership for BB Dragons

The industrialist, Peter Johansen, from Aarhus whose company Royal Denship A/S within the last 6 years has become the top five producer of super yachts over 80’ is now set to build small boats.
The transfer of the licence to Royal Denship to build fibreglass Dragon is part of our efforts to implement a successful modernization of the dragon production and marketing.
We will continue building dragons with wood deck and cold moulded models and will extend our service and spare part sale to the whole dragon fleet. At the same time we continue building the olympic boat type “Yngling”, “Soling” and BB10 meter. The sale of the whole boat programme – Zoom8, Byte and Optimist – continue.
The driving force, which Peter Johansen possesses, makes us confident that many of our visions for the development of the dragon can now be realized. Peter Johansen's effort will give the dragon a more prominent position within the modern regatta fleet.
One of the things that will contribute to create a whole new generation of dragons is the experience and know-how about industrialised production which has been build up in Royal Denship through the last years – among other things via another company of Peter Johansen, Dencam A/S, who produce moulds for the shipbuilding industry.
By using high-tech production methods, the so-called finite element –analyses and tank tests the new generation of the dragon will be even faster and more attractive for the global sailing elite who appreciates the dragon.
“It is, however, of immense importance that the new development and production of the dragon emerge from the long experience which Ole and Anders Børresen possess”, says Peter Johansen. “Børresen is and has always been the absolute leading builder of dragons – BB dragons have through the years won numerous awards, Olympic gold medals, cups and world championships, and this will continue”, he says.
Since Peter Johansen six years ago established Royal Denship he has invested considerable amounts in development projects with reference to rationalizing the construction of super yachts without lowering the demand for ultimate quality.
Peter Johansen has taken over the rights regarding the glass fibre version of the Børresen Dragon and the Børresen name in connection with the Dragon, but there will be a close daily contact with us who in the future will act as consultants and sub-contractor to the production of the new generation of dragons.
For any request about Dragons you are welcome.

New dinghies in the BB-program

We have extended our programme with two boat types so that now we are also selling Optimist and Byte CII dinghies. The two dinghies were exhibited at this year’s large boat exhibition at the Bella Centre near Copenhagen where they were shown great interest. The training dinghy BB Dragon White was the smashing price hammer of the exhibition, while the advanced rigging of Byte CII took the higher engineering’s breath away.

Club Opti

Club version

It has been many years since clubs and privates have been able to get a training dinghy for less than 10,000 Dkr. – This is now possible with Borresen’s BB White Dragon. With the BB White Dragon we are offering a robust training dinghy, which is protected on the corners of the hull by rubber reinforcements, and with a gunwale that is equipped with a strong rubbing piece. The hull is reinforced in corners and stern. The buoyancy tanks are made of fibreglass and equipped with buoyancy bags. Rudder and daggerboard are moulded in GRP and therefore they need no maintenance. Furthermore there are drain holes in the deck flange so that the dinghy can be kept upside down without getting full of water. The good finish makes the dinghy a good background for sponsor advertisements, and it appeals to the less sailing experienced parents, who might get worried by the sight of a worn-down club dinghy. The dinghy is built for training and is sold without certificate of measurement. With the BB White Dragon you get a robust and safe dinghy with a good finish at a very favourable price.

Optimist

Top of line optimist BB Gold Dragon

For regatta use we offer the top model BB Gold Dragon with biaxial fibreglass and a weight-optimised hull. The BB Dragon Gold is fitted with Frederiksen/Ronstan blocks and special air bags. The dinghy can be delivered with for example a MK 3 rigging and the newest racing radial sails on the market for just 22,990 Dkr. Furthermore top- and bottom covers as well as rudder- and dagger board bags are included in the price.

Byte CII

Byte CII – revolutionary rigging

Anders Børresen first saw the new CII at ISAF’s annual meeting in November 2003 and considers it to be one of the greatest developments of single-handed dinghies. It is technically revolutionary. For that reason Børresen applied for the right to sell the dinghy in Denmark while the CII rigging was still under construction. The weight area for Byte sailors is wide. Because of the dynamic rigging, the dinghy is now attractive for sailors between 90 and 160 lbs. This also makes the dinghy an interesting alternative to the more widespread and widely distributed dinghy types for clubs and continuation schools. Ian Bruce, the father of the Laser dinghy, constructed Byte CII. The Class is aspiring to become the women’s Olympic singlehandler.
Everybody at the exhibition was impressed by the concept of the new trim and the most common comment was “How the h… is it possible, and why hasn’t anybody done it before?

Zoom8

The Zoom8 class grows up

Zoom8 is now the third biggest dinghy Class in Denmark and Sweden and also the fastest growing. The class is now seriously riding on the crest of a wave. Some of the reasons for this are due to the very active Class organisation DZA (www.dza.dk) as well as the very fine international results the Danish Zoom8 sailors have achieved during the latest seasons. More than 70 dinghies have been sold in Denmark, and clubs own more than 70% of those. These clubs finely live up to the motto of the Danish Sail Union: “Sail sport on time” by choosing the Zoom8 as the dinghy to be the first step after the Optimist

Dragon

Dragon production in full swing

We are progressing favourably in the Dragon production. Soon the third Dragon of this spring is going out of the mould. On January the 16th British Dragon Association celebrated the 75-year jubilee of the Class. On that occasion BDA allotted A Borresen Dragon, and the lucky winner, Sarah Sullivan, who is now the owner of “Jubilee”, was found. Read more on www.britishdragons.org/project.htm.
The Danish Prince Henry’s boat called forth admiration at this year’s Bella Exhibition for its sublime quality, the Prince’s creative choice of colour and the beautifully settled monogram in the roof.
Crown Prince Frederik won a third place at the Prince Henry Cup in Cascais. Congratulations on yet a fine result for “Nanoq”

Yngling

Yngling – Countdown for the Olympic games

As an Olympic Class the Yngling is continuously subjected optimising and development. For instance we have launched a lightweight rudder tube, which is more than 2 lbs. lighter than the old model. The rudderstock is now produced in a stronger and stiffer version that rests to the laminate in the full length of the rudder blade. Together the improved physical qualities give a better and more precise steering. The mast step can be delivered with adjustment of the pressure spot at the bottom of the mast. Furthermore we are offering fairing of the hull, so that a very even course is attained along freeboard and underwater hull.
At the end of February we delivered an Yngling to Danish Sailing Association. We wish the Danish medal hope, Team Dorte O., good luck with the boat and congratulation with the first place on the ISAF WORLD SAILING RANKINGS.
